January 24. Todd Cameron leaves his friends.
January 27. Doug Henry, after a hiker named Anthony saves him from a man-eating Snorlax, finally catches up with Jessie, James, and Meowth. They direct him to Team Rocket headquarters in Viridian City.
February 19. Red Ketchum battles Cinnabar Island gym leader Chevy Blaine, and earns the Volcano Badge.
February 25. Leaf Perez decides to begin a Pokémon journey with the goal of finding Ho-oh, who kidnapped her as a child. She receives a starter Eevee from Professor Sam Oak.
February 28. After temporarily returning home, Misty Waterflower leaves her Horsea and Starmie in Cerulean City.
March 1. Amarillo Verde (8) is attacked by a wild Dratini. The Dratini is scared off by Red Ketchum and his Bulbasaur (33).
March 5. Red Ketchum and his friends arrive in Viridian City. Gary Oak arrives on the scene and loses to gym leader William Giovanni, due to Mewtwo. Red battles Jessie, James, and Meowth for the Earth Badge.
March 5. Leaf Perez single-handedly takes down a Team Rocket operation at Mt. Moon. Leaf receives a Helix fossil from Seymour Elm.
March 15. Red Ketchum (11), Misty Waterflower (11), and Brock Iwa return to Pallet Town.
March 15. A Mr. Mime comes to live with Delia Ketchum and she names it “Mimie”.
March 20. Silph Co. is taken over by Team Rocket. Leaf Perez and her Eevee help take them down. She receives the prototype Master Ball from Marvin Silph as a reward.
March 21. Mewtwo escapes from Team Rocket, destroying one of their facilities. It travels to New Island, and begins its plot to conquer the world.
March 24. Gary Oak receives an Eevee egg from Bill Whatley, which hatches immediately.
April 6. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa, along with trainers Corey Phelps, Neesha Owens, and Calvin “Fergus” Ferguson arrive on New Island. They meet Mewtwo, who captures their various Pokémon and clones them. It is victorious until the arrival of Mew. Flying into a rage, it tries to kill Mew. Red Ketchum is caught in the crossfire between the two powerful Pokémon, and is killed. He is subsequently restored to life by the tears of the Pokémon. Red’s noble sacrifice allows Mewtwo to see that humans have potential for goodness, and he departs, wiping the memories of the event from the minds of the humans and Pokémon involved. Its brief contact with Mew’s mind causes the innocent Mew to begin to go insane.
April 6. Todd Cameron is found by authorities on New Island. He is sent to an orphanage. He is shortly brought to the United States by his new foster parents.
April 19. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa meet Elite Four member Bruno Kendo, and help him capture a giant Onix.
May 4. The 4996 Indigo Conference opening ceremonies take place.
May 5. Red Ketchum wins his first round in the Conference. He uses his Krabby for the first time in battle. It evolves into Kingler.
May 6. Red Ketchum wins his second round.
May 7. Red Ketchum wins his third round.
May 8. Gary Oak is eliminated in the fourth round of the League. He returns home to Pallet Town.
May 8. Red Ketchum wins the fourth round, using his Muk for the first time in battle.
May 9. Red Ketchum meets fellow trainer Richie Cummings (11).
May 11. Red Ketchum is eliminated in the fifth round of the Conference, losing to Richie Cummings after his Charizard disobeys him.
May 12. Richie Cummings is defeated in the sixth round of the Conference.
May 15. Jon Dixon wins the 1996 Indigo Conference.
May 21. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa leave Pallet Town to collect the GS Ball from Philena Ivy (36) in Valencia Island. Red’s Pidgeotto evolves into Pidgeot. Red releases it.
May 24. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa arrive on Valencia Island. Brock chooses to remain there to help Philena Ivy, and Red and Misty start to head back to Pallet Town with the GS Ball.
May 25. Red Ketchum and Misty Waterflower meet Tracey Zimmerman (14), who adopts the alias "Tracey Sketchit". Red acquires a Lapras. Tracey joins Red and Misty on their travels.
May 26. Red Ketchum beats Cissy Sasuka (16), and Red earns his first Orange League badge, the Coral Eye Badge.

  • May 28. Arriving on Mandarin Island North, Red, Misty, Tracey, Jessie, and James face off against Butch Yong and Cassidy Willows as they use a Drowzee to take control of Pokémon, including Red's Pikachu, Misty's Togepi, and Meowth.3

May 31. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman arrive on Sunburst Island, and meet Mateo Ortiz. They accompany him on his mission to find inspiration by finding a crystal Onix.
June 4. Gary Oak enrolls in an accelerated program at Saffron University.
June 13. Red Ketchum beats Danny Reynolds in a race, and Red wins the Sea Ruby Badge.
June 16. Red Ketchum catches a Snorlax that has been swimming from island to island and consuming near everything in its path.
June 2. Arriving on Murcott Island, Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman encounter a swarm of Scyther. Tracey catches the swarm’s aged leader.
July 4. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman encounter Lorelei Lawrence of the Elite Four on Mandarin Island South. Misty insists on calling her "Prima".
July 5. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman meet feuding kids Ralph Wolfe and Emily Hughes. Misty plays matchmaker.
July 17. Professor Sam Oak asks Gary Oak to investigate the legend of the Pokémorph. After catching a Pidgeot, Gary travels to Valencia Island, and recruits Brock Iwa in his quest. They encounter Todd Cameron, who joins them.
July 18-29. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman travel to Minoswicho Island, again pursued by Jessie Porsley, James Von Rich, and Meowth. Separately, Brock Iwa, Todd Cameron, and Gary Oak arrive on the island, pursued by agents of The Claw. The twelve of them seek out the Pokémorph. Todd catches a Voltorb lost by Jessie, naming it “Boom-Boom”. Eventually they face the Pokémorph itself, which attacks them in its own defense, as the Krabby-turned-human The Claw has come to procure it. The Claw is defeated and reverted to a Pokémon, the “nine of destiny” face hallucinatory attacks, Tracey catches The Claw, and everyone’s memories of the event are suppressed by the Pokémorph as it tries to conceal its location. Gary returns to Pallet Town, Brock to Valencia Island, and Todd to the United States. Red, Misty, and Tracey are picked up by friendly boat pilot Heather "Marin" Dane, captain of the Polaris.
July 30. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, Tracey Zimmerman, and Heather Dane arrive on Shabuti Island. They meet Dane’s old associate, Carol Soprano, and Carol's sister Melody. Shortly after, the kids get involved in stopping the insane collector Lawrence Ryder III, who captures the Legendary Birds and attempts to capture Lugia as well. With Red’s aid, Lugia is successful in freeing the elemental avians, but only Melody’s song calms them.
September 30 (Monday). Red Ketchum defeats Trovita Island gym leader Rudy Delacroix. He is awarded the Spike Shell Badge. Misty Waterflower declines Rudy’s request to stay with him.
October 5. Red Ketchum's Charizard begins to obey him after Red provides comfort to its hurt.
October 7. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman meet firefighter Kyle Aden and his Wartortle for the first time.
October 12. Todd Cameron (11) comes across a Pidgey in Central Park, Castelia City. He has a very difficult time capturing it, and after he succeeds, he names it Notsotuff!.
October 16. Red Ketchum battles Kumquat Island gym leader Luana Drake in a Pokémon Double battle and is awarded the Jade Star Badge.
October 16. Wanting to escape his manipulative foster parents, Todd Cameron flees back to Johtokanto.
October 19. Misty Waterflower catches a Poliwag while seeking roots to help her sick friends.
October 20. Young reporter Craig Abramowitz, working for the Pokémon Times, is assigned to write a fluff piece. He is accompanied by child photographer Todd Cameron, who is doing work-for-hire business.
October 22. Red Ketchum defeats Pummelo Island gym leader and Orange Crew Leader Travis Drake and earns the right to call himself an Orange League Champion.
October 23. Brock Iwa is summarily fired by Philena Ivy as she comes out of a Stun-Spore induced stupor.
October 24. Red Ketchum releases his Lapras to return to its school.
November 4. Will Smalls wins the 4996 Johto League Silver Conference.

  • November 7. Delia Ketchum and Mimie, en route home from the market, come across Brock Iwa lying in a field. She takes him in.4

November 14. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Tracey Zimmerman arrive in Pallet Town, where Red gives the GS Ball to Professor Sam Oak. Upon their arrival they are reunited with Brock Iwa. Red and his friends are rescued from Team Rocket by Gary Oak, and Gary challenges Red to a one-on-one battle. Gary’s Eevee defeats Red’s Pikachu.
November 15. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa set out to the land of Johto, west of Pallet Town, so that Red may compete in the Johto League. Professor Oak asks Red to deliver the GS Ball to Kurt Tanaka in Azalea Town. Tracey remains in Pallet Town as an assistant to Professor Oak.
November 17. Casey McGinnis (10) is given a Pokémon trainer license from Professor Elm. Casey takes a Chikorita as her starting Pokémon.
November 18. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa arrive in New Bark Town and meet Professor David Elm.
November 18. Casey McGinnis catches a Pidgey.
November 20. Red Ketchum, Misty Waterflower, and Brock Iwa encounter young Casey McGinnis for the first time. Casey catches a Rattata, later naming it "Mousey”. Shortly after, she meets Macey Cousins, and the two battle, with Casey's Chikorita beating Macey's Cyndaquil. They become fierce rivals.
November 23. Red Ketchum catches a Heracross.
December 1. Gladys Muchmoney’s Snubbull begins following Team Rocket’s Jessie, James, and Meowth.
December 9. Red Ketchum catches a Chikorita.
December 17. Young reporter Craig Abramowitz meets Captain Heather Dane.
