1988

  • March 23. Meta Knight, the last known Star Warrior of the lost generation, arrives via his battleship, Halberd, on the artificial planet Popstar. He meets King Dedede, and acts as a hired goon in order to await the return of eNeMeE.
  • March 30. Young married couple Barbara and Adam Maitland go for a drive in their town of Winter River, Connecticut. While swerving to avoid a dog, they drive through the side of a covered bridge, and fall into the stream below. The shock of the crash causes them to lose consciousness, and they both drown.1
  • April 8. The Doctor (eighth incarnation) and Izzy Sinclair arrive in Shoreditch, London, to buy a rare comic book. They soon discover a conspiracy by a time-traveling nerd warlord to destroy all copies of that comic.2
  • April 27. While vacationing in Beirut, Los Angeles Police Department Lieutenant Frank Drebin infiltrates a meeting of various mind-controlled international figures: Soviet Premiere Mikhail Gorbachev, Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Iranian Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Drebin beats them up.3
  • April 27. Officer Nordberg Nordberg, while investigating a secret drug buy, is shot repeatedly, injured while stumbling around, and falls into the bay. He is taken to Our Sister of the Worthless Miracle Hospital where he is in critical condition.4
  • April 28. After returning to Los Angeles, Frank Drebin begins investigating Nordberg's shooting. This leads him to tycoon Vincent Ludwig, who is part of a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II, who is to visit in two days. Drebin meets Ludwig's assistant Jane Spencer, and the two fall madly in love later in the day. Also during that day, a mind-controlled doctor agent tries to kill Nordberg, but Frank stops him and the man rides an exploding missile into a fireworks factory.5
  • April 30. John Jones, a Chicago detective whom J'Onn J'Onzz had been secretly observing, is murdered by a pair of criminals. Though J'Onn is unable to save the detective, he assumes his form to arrest the criminals and continue Jones's work. "John Jones" will go on to become one of J'Onn's longest-maintained human aliases.
  • April 30-May 1. As the United Kingdom's Queen Elizabeth II arrives in Los Angeles, Frank Drebin is caught up in the case, learning of the pending assassination attempt. After making a ruckus at a ceremony inviting the queen (he ends up lying on top of her), he is fired from Police Squad. He comes to believe Jane Spencer is in league with Vincent Ludwig. At a California Angels/Seattle Mariners baseball game the queen attends, Drebin knocks out and replaces an Italian singer and then the head umpire to check all of the players, one of whom is a brainwashed assassin. It turns out to be retired player Reggie Jackson, and Drebin manages to stop him by knocking a fat lady on top of him. Ludwig takes Jane Spencer hostage, but Frank knocks him out with a stun dart. He falls off the stadium ledge, is run over by a bus, a steamroller, and the University of Southern California marching band. Jane is briefly mind-controlled into attempting to kill Frank, but his marriage proposal breaks through the hypnosis. Nordberg shows up, ready to return, and Drebin is reinstated into the police force for his heroism.6
  • May 14. A mysterious multi-colored meteor crashes into a treehouse in Go City, Colorado. The Gorman siblings Henry, Sheila, Melville, Wendell, and Werner are irradiated and given superpowers. After the discoveries, they decide to form the family superhero team Team Go!7
  • May 29-30. Barbara and Adam Maitland return to their home, unaware they are ghosts. They discover their home has been bought by the obnoxious Deetz family: strung-out real estate man Charles, his wife Delia, a modern artist, and her stepdaughter, Charles's daughter, Lydia, who is a goth, and is the first to notice the Maitlands. The ghost-like demon Betelgeuse begins to advertise so as to get a foothold on the physical plane.8
  • May 31. The mysterious time-traveler Rufus, coming from the year 2688, visits teen wannabe musicians Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. Passing them a time-traveling phone booth, he entreats them to study history by actually traveling in time. The two proceed, briefly encountering their future selves.9
  • June 1. Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan get in trouble as their time-displaced wards run amok. After breaking themselves out of prison, Bill and Ted put on a massive history presentation extravaganza, featuring each of the historical figures: Napoleon Bonaparte (from 1805), Billy the Kid (1879), Socrates (410 BCE), Sigmund Freud (1901), Ludwig van Beethoven (1809), Genghis Khan (1209), Jeanne d'Arc (1429), and Abraham Lincoln (1863). Their presentation results in their receiving passing grades. They subsequently return the historical figures to their proper times and places.10
  • June 4. Rufus returns to this era for an additional visit to Bill and Ted. He brings with him the two young noblewomen from the 15th century, Joanna and Elizabeth, who join the band. Rufus wants to jam, but none of the four are capable of playing an instrument.11
  • June 26. Gizmonic Institute janitor and amateur inventor Joel Robinson is sent by Deep 13 Department scientists Dr. Clayton Forrester and Dr. Laurence Erhardt into space aboard their satellite. As part of a social experiment, they force him to watch poor-quality movies.12
  • August. Adam and Barbara Maitland take control of the Deetzes and their guests in an attempt to scare them away. Instead, it makes them want to turn the home into a tourist attraction. Their decorator, having taken the Handbook from the Maitlands, enacts a seance that begins to destroy the Maitlands. A desperate Lydia Deetz summons Betelgeuse, who demands Lydia marry him. Betelgeuse disrupts the ceremony, saving the Maitlands, and begins the forced wedding. Barbara gets a sandworm to eat Betelgeuse. The Maitlands and the Deetzes agree to live together peacefully.13
  • August. The Cruise family moves from Illinois to California, accidentally bringing along with them an elastic alien, one of four recently transplanted to Earth via spatially-warped Apollo Moon Lander. The alien sort-of befriends paraplegic boy Eric Cruise. With the help of Ronald McDonald (through a dance at a nearby restaurant), Eric and the alien (now called "MAC") find the alien's family, and revive them with Coca-Cola. The alien family's confrontation with secretive government agents results in Eric's death in a gas station explosion. MAC and its family resurrect Eric through their strange powers, and as a result, the government agents agree to arrange for the aliens to get citizenship in the United States.14
  • September 5. Murphy Brown returns from a stint at the Betty Ford Clinic to the news magazine show FYI. She is reunited with co-anchors Jim Dial and Frank Fontana, and meets her substitute (now fellow co-anchor) Corky Sherwood, and new executive producer Miles Silverberg.15
  • September 7. Murphy Brown interviews Bobby Powell on her show FYI and asks him pointed questions. She meets her newly hired house painter (despite attempts to fire him) Eldin Bernecky.16
  • September 12. A group of kids visiting the museum at the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles come across a "dinosaur egg". It hatches to reveal a dinosaur-like alien being, whose telepathy allows it to learn English. They name it Denver. The kids take Denver in, and hijinks ensue.17
  • September 14. Joel Robinson brings his four robot creations Crow T. Robot, Beeper, Gypsy, and Cambot, online, aboard the space station he has dubbed the Satellite of Love.18
  • September 26. The TARDIS, carrying the Doctor (sixth incarnation) and Jason Marquis, arrives in London. They meet with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who places them on an assignment. They soon travel to a night club, which is attacked by Daleks and Cybermen. The Doctor and Jason, along with night club singer Crystal Queen, pursue the aliens, at one point traveling to Bar Galactica, and eventually save an American diplomat.19
  • September 30. The day Elvira quits her show due to sexual harassment, she learns of the death of her heretofore unknown great aunt Morgana. Learning she will receive an inheritance, and having a sudden desperate need of money to launch her Las Vegas show, she heads for Fallwell, Massachusetts.20
  • October 4. The Doctor (sixth incarnation), Jason Marquis, and Crystal Queen go on another adventure, defeating a malevolent entity.21
  • October. Elvira reaches Fallwell, Massachusetts, where her car breaks down. She inherits her great-aunt's home, familiar (resembling a dog) Algonquin (whom she nicknames "Gonq"), and spellbook (thinking it's a cookbook). The rigid townsfolk disapprove of her, but she is popular with the youth as well as movie theater owner Bob Redding. Her great-uncle Vincent Talbot, an evil sorcerer, attempts to get the book. Elvira fixes up the house, but is unable to sell it. The town's adults move against her after she accidentally makes them all have an orgy after learning of her witch nature. The townsfolk attempt to burn her at the stake, but she harnesses her inherited powers through a ring and dowses the flames. Vincent procures the book, and becomes vastly powerful during the lunar eclipse, but Elvira manages to defeat him in a duel, with his essence dispersing. The house and book are destroyed in a fire during the fight. Elvira soon earns the love of the town, and inherits Vincent's estate, and has the money to open that show in Vegas after all.22
  • October 9. Briarwood, Ontario youth Andrew Clements is accidentally irradiated by a photon beam while mowing the lawn of local inventor Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate.23
  • October 10. Andrew Clements discovers he has developed super powers as a result of his exposure. He adopts the code-name Ultra Man, despite the warnings of Dr. Jeffcoate.24
  • October 11. Using his powers, and with some help from Dr. Benjamin Jeffcoate, Andrew Clements manages to rescue a girl he likes from a kidnapper.25
  • October 18. Roseanne Conner, like her sister Jackie Harris, a factory worker in Lanford, Illinois, is forced to leave work early in order to have a meeting with her daughter Darlene's teacher. Roseanne learns that her daughter has been barking in school. Frustrated at having to do this while being primary caretaker of she and her husband Dan's three children (Darlene, Becky, and D.J.), she is enraged by his spending most of the day goofing off and drinking. They have a fight, but come to detente after helping Darlene with a bad cut on her hand.26
  • October 29-November 6. Mario Mario, Luigi Mario, Princess Peach, and Toad travel to the land of Subcon. Discovering the Kingdom is under the subjugation of mad King Wart, they set out to defeat him. Along the way, the Mario Brothers first encounter many new species of "bad guys", including Shyguys, Bob-Ombs, and Pokeys, as well as the in-transition transgender Birdo Katherine. They eventually face Wart and depose him.27
  • November 8. Vice President George Bush is elected President of the United States, defeating Democratic Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis.28
  • November 9 (Wednesday). Serial killer Charles Lee Ray, chased by the Chicago police, is abandoned by his partner Eddie Caputo. Shot and chased into a toy store by Detective Mike Norris, Ray finds himself fatally wounded. With his dying breaths he issues a Voodoo chant, and transfers his soul into a nearby Good-Guy Doll. Norris believes him to be dead.29
  • November 10. Karen Barclay buys a Good-Guy Doll from a street peddler at a discount for her son Andy for his sixth birthday, unaware the doll houses the soul of Charles Lee Ray. The doll introduces itself to Andy as Chucky. Later that evening, as Karen's best friend Maggie Peterson watches Andy, the doll, in a homicidal madness, attacks Maggie, causing her to plummet from the window and die on impact with a truck.30
  • November 11. The evil Chucky doll has Andy Barclay take him to school and then play hookie, leading him to Eddie Caputo's hidey-hole. Chucky blows up Eddie with a gas leak. Andy is found at the scene, and taken for psychiatric evaluation. Andy's mother Karen takes the Chucky doll home, and finds it never had its batteries installed. She threatens to throw the doll in the fire unless it responds to her. It attacks her, and flees. Karen seeks out Detective Mike Norris, who does not believe her. He tails her as she seeks out the peddler who sold her the doll, and he rescues her from rape. They learn the peddler found the doll at the site of Charles Lee Ray's death. After Norris drops her off, he is attacked by Chucky. He manages to survive after shooting the doll in its arm.31
  • November 12. Chucky seeks out his Voodoo guru John Bishop, and learns he is transforming into a doll/human hybrid. After learning he can transfer his soul into Andy Barclay's body, he murders Bishop with his own voodoo doll. Found by Karen Barclay and Mike Norris, Bishop tells Karen how to kill Chucky with just before dying. Chucky attacks Andy again at the mental hospital, and murders Andy's psychologist. Andy escapes and goes home, where Chucky attacks him again. Karen and Mike come to Andy's rescue, and a pitched battle ensues. Andy and Karen burn the Chucky alive, and Karen dismembers it with gunshots, and finally Mike shoots it dead through its heart.32
  • November 13. While filming his 60th Birthday Special, Mickey Mouse uses the magical hat from his filming of The Sorcerer's Apprentice to repair damage caused by Roger Rabbit. The hat causes him to disappear, as he is transported to the hat's owner's extra-dimensional realm. The owner curses Mickey with others' inability to recognize him.33
  • November 14. Joey Wilson is abducted by enemies of his father, mercenary Slade Wilson. While rescued by his father, his throat is slashed, rendering him mute. Joey's mother, Adeline Kane, enraged at the career that endangered their child, tries to kill Slade, but fails, merely destroying one of his eyes.34
  • November 14. Mickey Mouse finds himself in Columbus, Ohio, and meets the child Andy Keaton. Andy tries a scheme to pass Mickey off as Mickey Mouse, but neither of his sisters Mallory and Jennifer buy it. Mickey departs.35
  • November 16. Mickey Mouse winds up in the Cheers bar in Boston, Massachusetts, where he sings a song for Rebecca Howe's 37th birthday, the bar manager, and ingratiates himself to her. He also meets the bar staff Sam Malone, Carla LeBec, and Woody Boyd, and regular patrons Norm Peterson, Cliff Clavin, and Frasier Crane.36
  • November 16. Donald Duck is arrested under suspicion of involvement in Mickey Mouse's disappearance. The law firm McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak takes up his defense, specifically lawyer Michael Kuzak.37
  • November 18. Mickey Mouse ends up at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, where a dance number gets the sorcerer to remove the spell. Donald Duck is acquitted of all charges, and Mickey celebrates this "60th" (87th) birthday.
  • November 23. The Doctor (seventh incarnation) and Ace McShane defeat a Cybermen conspiracy to possess a living weapon.38
  • November 23. The Neanderthal Kirok is discovered frozen in a glacier, and is revived. He subsequently enters Oklahoma City University School of Law.39
  • November 25-December 3. The Mario Brothers once again head out to rescue Princess Peach, as she has been abducted by Bowser, and the Mushroom Kingdom has been quickly conquered by the Koopa Troop. Mario and Luigi gain new abilities from magical suits and the Racoon Leaf, which grants them the ability to fly while sprouting raccoon ears and a tail. They face many new enemies, including Chain Chomps, Boos, Thwomps, Spikes, Dry Bones, and Boom-Boom. The brothers overthrow the usurpers of seven of the Mushroom Kingdom's vassal states, which have been overrun by one of Bowser's seven children: Larry, Morton, Wendy, Iggy, Roy, Lemmy, and Ludwig. Bowser ultimately suffers defeat.40
  • November 26. After installing voice software in his robot, Joel Robinson renames Beeper Tom Servo.
  • November 28. After Flintheart Glomgold illegally breaks a contact by use of explosives, Scrooge McDuck, rather than use the courts, enlists the use of Gyro Gearloose and one of his time machines. Scrooge, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and pilot Launchpad McQuack travel back in time. After a few adventures, they return to the present, accompanied by Bubba the Cave Duck, whom Scrooge more-or-less adopts, and Bubba's pet triceratops, Tootsie.41
  • December 9-12. Ninja Hayabusa Ryu receives a letter from his father Jo, who he thinks has died, to find his associate Dr. Walter Smith. Ryu departs for the United States. He encounters American CIA agents and a mysterious woman (Irene Hew) and evil ninjas, who murder Smith and steal dragon statues to revive a demon. Ryu encounters his father, mind-controlled, and liberates him. Jo dies taking a shot for his son. Ryu destroys the revived demon and the evil cult behind it, and claims Lew as his own and swears vengeance on the CIA.42
