Timeline: 1963



  • January 14. The Muppet comedian/musician Rowlf the Dog first appears as a cast member on The Jimmy Dean Show. Most viewers assume he's a puppet.1
  • January 29. Realizing Krypton's days are almost up, scientists Lara Lor-Van and Jor-El send their infant son Kal-El away from the planet in an experimental rocket, hoping he will survive on another world.2
  • January 31. Brainiac's machinations finally reach full fruition, resulting in the planet Krypton's explosion. Most of the population is killed, including Lara Lor-Van and Jor-El. Moments before the planet's destruction, an alien agent teleports the city of Kandor onto its ship, reducing its size and storing it in a bottle. Additionally, Alura In-Ze and Zor-El (accompanied by their daughter, Kara) manage to protect Argo City in a force-field, though it is not a long-term solution, and the city begins to float as a derelict amongst the planet's debris with the protection to inevitably collapse.3
  • Shortly after giving birth, exiled Atlantean Queen Atlanna brings her son Orin to human lighthouse keeper Tom Curry, who agrees to raise him. He renames the child Arthur.4
  • February 13 (Wednesday). Kal-El, in the rocket, arrives in Smallville, where he is discovered by Jonathan () and Martha Kent (), who adopt him and name him Clark.5
  • February 19 (Tuesday). The Time Lord called the Doctor and his granddaughter Susan (who adopts the alias Susan Foreman from the I.M. Foreman scrapyard), arrive in London in their TARDIS. The TARDIS takes the shape of a police box. Susan begins attending the Coal Hill School.6
  • The Doctor ("eleventh" incarnation) arrives in London and sabotages his past self's TARDIS's chameleon circuit.7
  • March 20 (Wednesday). The master thief Diabolik (34) recruits Eva Kant (31) as his assistant and they quickly become lovers.
  • Ronald McDonald (28), an unemployed clown, is hired by the McDonald's hamburger restaurant company as a spokesman. There is no relation between Ronald and the company's founders.8
  • March 31-April 1 (Sunday-Monday). Susan Foreman and her friends John Brent and Gillian Roberts face an invasion by an ancient ice-inhabiting sapience, which terrorizes London and kills several people, including John's dad. They spend days escaping the creature, and make it to the TARDIS and Susan's grandfather, the Doctor. He initially refuses to help, overwhelmed by his non-interference conditioning, but breaks through, and captures the creature in a snowflake and drops it off on Pluto.9
  • April 8 (Monday). Liam Colin Leprechaun is hired by General Mills as the spokesman for their Lucky Charms cereal. He starts going professionally as Lucky the Leprechaun.
  • April 20 (Saturday). Emily Elizabeth Howard adopts a tiny red puppy she names Clifford.
  • April 22. Retired U.S. Navy Commander Horatio Crunch, secretly a humanoid Anthro, is hired on as a mascot for a Quarker Oats' cereal, Cap'n Crunch.
  • May 7 (Tuesday). Thomas Sargent (68), the comedian known as "Max Miller" and the Cheeky Chappie, dies.10
  • The Doctor (eighth incarnation) and Sam Jones () visit London. After meeting young vagabond Fitz Kreiner (27) in a florist shop, the Doctor investigates mysterious behavior from people in an asylum. Fitz and Sam go on a date, which ends badly. The machinations of aliens treating humans as guinea pigs for their mind-control experiments results in the deaths of the patients, including Muriel Kreiner, Fitz's mother. The lost Fitz is invited to join the Doctor and Sam on their travels, which he accepts.11
  • June 11 (Tuesday). The University of Alabama is forced to desegregate. In order to protect the two new African American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood, U.S. President John Kennedy (46) nationalizes the Alabama National Guard to protect them. Alabama Governor George Wallace (43) gives a speech condemning the desegregation while attempting to block the students' entry. He ultimately moves. Student Forrest Gump (19) is on hand at the proceedings, and returns to Malone a book she had dropped.12
  • A project whose goal is recreating Adolf Hitler begins giving infant clones of Hitler to childless couples.13
  • The Doctor is unwittingly saved from a Dalek by his own seventh incarnation, who pushes the Dalek in front of a bus. The seventh Doctor takes the dropped TARDIS instruction manual, as it has become a segment of the Key to Time.14
  • July 29 (Monday). Alcoholic neurosurgeon Stephen Strange gets into a bad car accident. His life is saved by surgeons, but he suffers irreparable nerve damage to his hands.15
  • Calcutta orphan Hadji Singh (9) saves the life of Dr. Benton Quest (49) and his son Jonny (9). Quest adopts the boy into his family.16
  • September 3 (Tuesday). Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown (10) opens his detective agency in Idaville, Florida. He enlists the aid of his best friend Sally Kimball.17
  • September 6 (Friday). Los Angeles Sun reporter Tim O'Hara (29), while looking into a story on the launch of the United States Air Force's experimental rocket the X-15, comes upon a crashed spaceship. Inside is the Noswal anthropologist Exigius 12 1/2 (431), who is injured. Tim pulls him from the debris and takes him home to recuperate. The alien, calling himself a "Martian", shows amazing powers to Tim, including retractable antennae, invisibility, and telepathy. Tim is soon arrested by military agents as he had somehow filed a story revealing the military's earlier flubs. As Tim does not reveal the Martian's nature to the military despite going to prison, the Martian (now dubbed "Uncle Martin", helps arrange for Tim to give a convincing means of receiving military secrets. Tim agrees to let Martin stay with him while he repairs his ship, adopting Martin into the O'Hara clan.18
  • September 12 (Friday). United States President John Kennedy assigns decorated soldier Joe Colton (27) the task of assembling a special task force to face unusual threats. Among his initial choices for membership is fellow soldier Miles Manheim (33).19
  • September 17 (Tuesday). The Chipmunks Alvin, Simon, and Theodore Seville (all 9) encounter a rival group with the same name: Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor Miller (all three 9). They begin a feud that ultimately ends with the Millers adopting the new name the Chipettes.20
  • September 21 (Saturday). Insane fundamentalist and widow Margaret White gives birth to a daughter, not having been aware she was pregnant. She names her Carietta White.21
  • October 11. Bob Wilson, recently released from a sanitarium, boards a flight headed home, alongside his wife. Mid-flight, while the plane flies through a storm, he sees a gremlin appear on the wing, who begins tampering with one of the engines. No one heeds his warnings, as his recent mental illness and the outlandishness of the claim call his sanity into question. Bob eventually opens the emergency window on the plane, and, having procured a gun, shoots the gremlin, nearly being propelled from the plane himself. Upon landing, Bob is taken away in an ambulance, but the crew soon discovers the damaged engine.22
  • October 18 (Friday). Conservative MP Alec Douglas-Home () becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, replacing Harold Macmillan.23
  • With the field protecting Argo City collapsing, Alura In-Ze and Zor-El place their teenage daughter Kara into a rocket, in suspended animation, and launch her toward Earth, where they have surmised Kal-El would end up.
  • November 10-23. The Doctor (sixth incarnation) and Peri Brown () arrive in Soviet Kazakhstan. They are forced to pose as KGB agents who were posing as scientists. They help a rocket that had been sent to the dark side of the Moon get back, to find its occupant to be a talking dog, the pioneer Laika, thought dead for six years. Laika has been altered with the brain and vocal cords of a missing cosmonaut. The Doctor and an American double-agent, Larisa Petrov, take another rocket to investigate and encounter Moonbase Eisenhower. Meanwhile, Peri and the Soviet base crew are besieged by Laika, who alters other test animals into an army. The Doctor and Petrov discover that a mysterious alien emissary, a black hole, had absorbed the base crew and altered Laika. Laika and her forces nearly cause a nuclear armageddon, but she and her main lieutenant die, as well as the Soviet leader of the base. The Doctor takes the survivors of the animals back to the moon, and Petrov joins them in the black hole, which leaves chastened.24
  • November 22. Coal Hill School teachers Ian Chesterton (31) and Barbara Wright (29) take an interest in the girl Susan Foreman, and follow her. Happening upon the TARDIS, the Doctor abducts them.25
  • November 22. United States President John Kennedy (46) is assassinated in Dallas, Texas.26 Quantum Leaper Sam Beckett enters a secret service agent and saves the life of first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.27 The Doctor ("ninth" incarnation) is on hand.28 Lee Harvey Oswald, one of the gunmen, also shoots at Kennedy, and is arrested as the prime suspect.
  • Vice President Lyndon Johnson () is sworn in as thirty-sixth President of the United States.
  • November 23 (Saturday). The Doctor (seventh incarnation) and Ace McShane () arrive in London. They became embroiled in the machinations of the Daleks as the final part of their civil war, trying to pursue the Hand of Omega, which the Doctor had left behind in his first incarnation. They are helped by the British military, including Ian "Chunky" Gilmore (), Rachel Jensen, and Allison Williams. The Dalek factions and Davros are all defeated, with the Doctor claiming to have destroyed Skaro.29
  • November 23. Bob Dovie is visited in succession by the Doctor in his first eight incarnations. They are accompanied by Susan Foreman, Ian Chesterton (32), Barbara Wright (30), Jamie McCrimmon (27), Zoe Heriot (20), Sarah Jane Smith (22), Leela (27), Nyssa (30), Peri Brown (24), Ace McShane (16), and Charley Pollard (18).30
  • November 29-30. After the assassination of a couple of prominent British politicians, the Doctor (seventh incarnation) and Ace McShane () return to this era, and team up with Chunky Gilmore's fledgling Intrusion Countermeasures Group, including waffling Professor Rachel Jensen and young Allison Williams. They manage to defeat a conspiracy by the infiltrating alien scourge the Light to wipe out the United States in a nuclear bombardment.31
  • December 10. The Sultanate of Zanzibar gains independence from the United Kingdom.
  • December 10. The Tan Zanzibar moves out of Britain's house.
  • December 14. Stephen Strange, traveling in Tibet searching for the mysterious Ancient One, finds his quarry. The Ancient One refuses to grant Strange's request, but does offer to teach him the mystic arts.32
  • December 24. A Volkswagen Beetle is mystically endowed with life and sapience.
