  • March 4. William Henry Harrison (68) is sworn in as ninth President of the United States.2
  • April 4. United States President William Henry Harrison (68) dies from pneumonia. Vice President John Tyler (51) is sworn in as tenth President of the United States.3

1842

  • September 21. The world devourer Galactus arrives at the planet Zenn-La. Young adventurer Norrin Radd (57) negotiates a reprieve for his planet by agreeing to become Galactus's herald. Norrin is transformed into the Silver Surfer by the Power Cosmic, and given vast power, but his memories are largely suppressed in order to limit his empathy for Galactus's future victims.

1843

  • The twins Abby and Zara drop off a book, a volume of the extra-dimensional History of the Earth, in a book store in London.4
  • December 24-25. The ghost of Jacob Marley appears to his former business partner Ebenezer Scrooge (57), heralding visits by other spectral beings. Scrooge is subsequently visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, who take him on space/time journeys, and remind Scrooge of the value of kindness and warn him that he will die unmourned if he does not change his ways. Scrooge repents, and he subsequently has a deep shift in his outlook, makes his clerk Bob Cratchit (30) a partner, connects with his nephew, helps Cratchit's lame son Tim (6) get the medical help he needs, and becomes generous and kind to all.5

1845

  • March 3. The Florida Territory is admitted to the United States as the state of Florida, the twenty-seventh state to join the Union.8
  • March 4. James K. Polk (49) is sworn in as the eleventh President of the United States.9
  • March 29 (Saturday). St. Petersburg, Missouri boy Tom Sawyer (12) is forced to whitewash a fence as punishment for skipping afternoon school the previous day. He cleverly tricks other kids into doing the work for him.10
  • March 30 (Sunday). Tom Sawyer formally meets Becky Thatcher, whom he develops a crush on.11

March 31 (Monday). Tom Sawyer, in school, becomes romantically involved with Becky Thatcher, and they kiss several times. Later in the day, Becky gets upset about Tom's previous crush, and their "relationship" begins to collapse.[4]
March 31. Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn (12) play in a cemetery at night. There they accidentally become secret witnesses to a murder, as the criminal "Injun Joe" murders local Dr. Robinson during a crime gone wrong. Tom and Huck flee.[5]
April 1. When the body of Dr. Robinson is found, Injun Joe fingers Muff Potter as the killer. Potter is arrested. Tom Sawyer, knowing the truth, begins bringing Potter gifts as his jail window.[6]
April 8-9. Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Joe Harper run away to Jackson Island. After they fall asleep, their raft drifts away, and they later discover that their loved ones believe they have died after finding the derelict raft.[7]
April 13 (Sunday). Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Joe Harper return to St. Petersburg and reveal themselves in the middle of their own funeral. Tom and Joe's families are happy to be reunited with them, and Tom's Aunt Polly hugs Huck to make him feel good.[8]
June 8. Former United States President Andrew Jackson (78) dies from chronic tuberculosis, dropsy, and heart failure.
December 29. The Republic of Texas is annexed to the United States, becoming the state of Texas, the Union's twenty-eighth state.
December 29. The Tan Texas moves into America's house.

1846

  • May 13. The United States declares war on Mexico, beginning the Mexican-American War.12
  • June 15. The Oregon Treaty is signed between the United States and United Kingdom, ending the dispute over the border between American and British claims.13
  • December 28. The Iowa Territory is admitted to the United States as the state of Iowa. It is the twenty-ninth state to join the Union.14

1847

  • The Doctor (fourth incarnation) and Mike Yates (68/2010) arrive in the Murgin Pass in Prussia, and encounter a storyteller, whose muse is The Demon. They help the storyteller, Albert Tiermann, to liberate himself from the Demon's influence, and have himself experience emotions again. Mike and the Doctor hear a message from Mrs. Wibbsey and head back to the future to pick her up.

April 26. Snap, Crackle, and Pop are born in the realm of gnomic elves adjacent to the Earth realm.
August 30. Thaal Sinestro is born on Korugar.

February 2. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo ends the Mexican-American War. Mexico cedes the majority of its northern half to the United States.

  • February 21. Massachusetts Representative and former U.S. President John Quincy Adams (80) suffers a massive cerebral hemorrhage on the floor of the House.15
  • February 23. John Quincy Adams (80) dies from his injuries.16
  • May 29. The Wisconsin Territory is admitted as the thirtieth state of the United States as the state of Wisconsin.17
  • June. Virginia Hex runs away with a traveling salesman, abandoning her son Jonah (9) with his father.
  • August 12. George Stephenson (72) dies of pleurisy.
  • November 7. Major General and Whig candidate Zachary Taylor (63) defeats Michigan Senator and Democratic candidate Lewis Cass in the United States presidential election.18
  • December. Young teacher Ishmael Cox (24) travels from Manhattan to Nantucket, hopeful to set out on a whaling voyage. He stays at a boarding house where he ends up having to share a bed with the Polynesian "cannibal" Queequeg (24). He quickly falls in love with the impressive harpooner, who declares Ishmael his husband, but Ishmael somehow is unaware of his being gay. Ishmael and Queequeg eventually join the crew of the Pequod under the captaincy of Ahab Ceeley ().19
  • December 19. Emily Brontë (30) dies from tuberculosis.20
  • December 25. The whaling ship Pequod launches from Nantucket.21

1849

  • March 4. Zachary Taylor (64) becomes twelfth President of the United States. He is sworn in on the following day.22
  • May 28. Anne Brontë (29) dies from tuberculosis.23

Prince Dakkar (31) returns to Bundelkhand to begin his plans against British control in India.

  • June 15. Former President James K. Polk (54) dies from complications due to cholera.24
  • October 7. Edgar Allan Poe (40) dies under mysterious circumstances.25

November 25. Martin Pawley is born on a homestead in west Texas, United States. His mother is half-Cherokee, half-white. His biological father, Ethan Edwards (20), suspects he is the father.[10]

  • The town of Hill Valley, California is founded.
  • July 9. United States President Zachary Taylor (65) dies in office, apparently from food poisoning. Vice President Millard Fillmore () is sworn in as thirteenth President of the United States.
  • July 10. A mad scientist, inspired by Dr. Victor Frankenstein's works as depicted in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, brings his first homunculus to life in Heidelberg, Baden. He names it Herman.
  • September 9. The state of California is admitted to the United States as the thirty-first state, carved from territory ceded from Mexico.
