1816

  • May. The Doctor (eighth incarnation) meets Mary Shelley (), and after an encounter with a future version of the Doctor, invites Mary to travel with him in the TARDIS. She accepts.1
  • After several adventures, the Doctor returns Mary Shelley to her life.

December 4. Secretary of State and Democratic-Republican candidate James Monroe (58) defeats New York Senator and Federalist candidate Rufus King in the United States presidential election.
December 11. The Indiana Territory is admitted to the United States as Indiana, the nineteenth state to join the Union.

  • March 4. James Monroe (58) is sworn in as the fifth President of the United States.3
  • July 18. Jane Austen (41) dies.

December 10. The state of Mississippi is admitted to the United States as its twentieth state, carved from the Mississippi Territory, the remainder of which becomes the Alabama Territory.

1818

  • Mary Shelley (20) publishes the novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus. It is based on a true story.
  • May 10. Paul Revere (83) dies.

The Doctor (third incarnation) and Sarah Jane Smith (1974) witness the return of the "sorcerer" Maximilian.
October 28. Former First Lady Abigail Adams (73) dies.

  • December 3. The Illinois Territory is admitted to the United States as the state of Illinois, the twenty-first state of the Union.

1819

  • February 22. The Adams-Onís Treaty is signed, ceding the territory of Florida to the United States, with Spain relinquishing its claims to the Oregon Country, as well as the United States relinquishing its claims to Texas.4
  • August 15. The TARDIS, carrying the Doctor (fifth incarnation), Nyssa (40), and Tegan Jovanka (23), arrives in Manchester, England. The travelers soon get caught up in local events, befriending a family.5
  • August 16. Thousands of people come to Peter's Field in Manchester, England, for a peaceful demonstration promoting suffrage for the poor. The local cavalry rides into the sealed off area, and tramples and murders several people. The Doctor, Nyssa, and Tegan Jovanka are caught up in the massacre, with Nyssa suffering trauma as a new friend's, Cathy's, infant child is killed.6
  • December 14. The Alabama Territory is admitted to the United States as the state of Alabama, the twenty-second state to join the Union.7

  • March 15. The Massachusetts District of Maine is admitted to the United States as the separate state of Maine, the twenty-third state admitted to the Union.8

December 6. United States President James Monroe (62) wins reelection as he runs effectively unopposed.9
